Left Handed Golfing Equipment
Golf is a unique sport in many ways. For instance, it’s the only sport wherein the lower your score, the better your performance. Less superficially, it’s one of those sports where the equipment tends to differ considerably depending on whether or not the golfer is left or right handed. With basketball and football, there is little difference in equipment – players will tend to use the same balls and wear the same uniforms regardless of which of their hands is most dominant. In baseball, batting helmets and gloves will be specific to one hand or the other (obviously), but ultimately, the majority of the game’s equipment, such as the bats and balls, are suited to either left or right handed golfers equally. With golf equipment, however, it is a different story.
Iron Sets and the Golfer
Every golfer knows that a quality set of golf clubs is one of the most important tools for performing effectively on the course. While the drivers are critically important to setting forth with a great opening, and the putters are essential to sinking a shot when it really counts, one cannot overlook the vital importance of the irons. That’s right – a high quality set of irons usually translates directly into numbers off your score.
What exactly are the irons and why are they so important? Well, as you know, there are three classes of golf clubs, and each class has its own intended functionality and specific purpose. There are the woods, which are used to tee off and to drive the ball for long distances. The heaviest of these is sometimes called the driver. Then there are the putters which are used to sink the ball into the cup with a delicate touch whenever it ends up on the green. In between, of course, are the irons.
The History of Golf Balls
Any golfer who gets heavily into the game will soon realize that the sport of golf is one that possesses a uniquely in-depth and rich history that is ripe for study and contemplation. While it might not directly improve your game, knowing a thing or two about the history of the game can increase your appreciation for where the game came from and even give you some insights in how best to approach it in the modern day.
Of all the elements used in golf, the one that has changed the most over the ages is undoubtedly the golf ball itself. When golf first began to be played in Scotland, solid wooden balls were used. Somewhat brittle and apt to changing shape when struck with a club, these balls were quickly found to be unsuitable and were replaced with what were known as “featheries”, a golf ball made from goose feathers tightly packed together into a ball and sewn up inside a skin of leather. These balls, once dried, were much harder than one might expect and as such, were less prone to warping and flew much further than the previous wooden balls. Click Here to Read More »
The Handy Golf Ball Retriever
When one thinks of the indispensable tools of the golfing trade, a number of items immediately come to mind. For instance, everyone knows that a good quality set of golf clubs is required to play golf well, as well as the right golf ball, the right shoes, and the right gloves. However, there is one other tool that every golfer either owns or will soon find him or herself wishing they did – the handy golf ball retriever.
What exactly is a golf ball retriever? Simply put, it’s a stick with a loop-like cup on the end, which is used for retrieving golf balls that have gone astray on the course. There are a number of uses for this most handy tool, and it’s hard to imagine any golfer who hasn’t found a need for it at some point or another.
Drivers and the Golfer
Choosing the right golf clubs can be quite a challenge, and most golfers have already met with the demands of such a choice at one time or another. However, if there’s one club in the bag that we’re going to be spending a lot of time with, it’s the driver. As the club that you’ll use for your first shot at each and every hole, it’s important that you know how to select the right driver to ensure the best quality results – your score depends on it!
Just why is it that the driver is so important to a golfer? Well, first of all, a quick tutorial on the different types of clubs found in the average golf club. A well-equipped golfer will have three different types of clubs, each with a variety of weights – woods, irons, and putters. The woods are the heaviest of the clubs, and are generally used to drive the ball for long distances down the course. The heaviest of the woods, the one labelled with a number “1” is called the driver. Click Here to Read More »
Selecting Golf Balls
Any golfer worth his or her salt knows that the quality of their game is heavily dependent upon their equipment. This is why so much effort is spent on selecting the right clubs for each and every shot. However, despite this emphasis on clubs, selecting the right golf balls is also an essential ingredient to shaving those last few points off of your score. That said, how does one go about choosing the right ball? Much like a club, it ultimate depends upon the individual golfer.
Choosing the Right Putter
When you think of “practicing golf”, what’s the first thing to come to your mind? If you’re like most people, you envision being out on the driving range, practicing your long distance shot, dreaming of being able to get to the green in a single stroke off the tee. That’s all well and good, but what most people fail to realize is that the ability to drive is only a small percentage of the entire game of golf. If all you do is practice driving, then what are you going to do once you actually get to the green? How will you sink the ball into the cup?
Tips for Buying Golf Clubs
When you first set out to become a golfer, one of the first things you’re going to realize is that buying a set of good golf clubs can be quite an investment. You’re also likely to have a great deal of excitement about your new hobby, however, and this unfortunately leads many people to make the mistake of rushing out and buying the most expensive set of golf clubs on the market, assuming that they’re the “best”. If you’re reading this article, we can assume that it’s because you hope to avoid that trap and actually put your money into a set of clubs that will improve your game, and give you a solid return on your monetary investment. If that’s the case, there are several things that you must consider.
What is the Proper Way to Hold a Golf Club?
The golf club is the only connection you have with the golf ball and as such a very important tool in your game. Players with high end equipment, perfect stances, and flawless postures are often felled by an improper grip of the golf club.
Holding the club is such a basic element that it is easy to overlook by new players or even experienced players, who may have simply developed a bad habit. There are three standard ways to hold the club; the interlocking, overlapping, and the ten finger grip. Using the interlocking technique, the player will wrap their fingers around the club until the little finger of the target hand is over the index finger of the trail hand. The target hand is the hand opposite of the dominant hand. So, for example, if the player is right handed, the target hand would be the left hand. The overlapping technique is similar to the interlocking except that the pinky finger of the target hand and index finger of the trail hand overlaps. The ten finger technique is rarely used anymore and is thought to be a throw back to golf’s origins. Also called the baseball technique, the player’s fingers simply meet and do not interlock or overlap.
Tips For A Proper Swing
You have the golf clubs, golf bag, golf balls, and are now ready to play. You may have all the equipment right down to those fancy golf club covers, but a game is nothing if you are not employing proper techniques. Achieving that proper swing is one of the hardest techniques for beginners and even for avid players. It takes a certain amount of finesse to strike the ball in such a way to get good distance in the direction that you want. The way you swing that club is one of the primary factors that affect this. There are several steps in achieving that proper swing, and to be honest, there are plenty of professionals that have yet reach such a point so do not get discouraged.
