Helpful Golf Drills to Improve Your Game
Rare is the golfer who doesn’t want to improve his or her golf swing. There are lots of reasons why this might be. Perhaps it’s because golf is one of those games where it’s impossible to acquire a “perfect score” (short of getting a hole in one on every hole on a course!), meaning that the people who play it are continually compelled to drop their score lower and lower. Golf is an addictive game, to be sure. Whatever the reason for it, though, the fact remains that people always want to improve their golf game in some way or another, and the following golf drills are one of the best ways to do just that.
Distance Drills
One of the problems that many beginners have when they first step out onto the golf course is that they find it difficult to get the distance they think they should. When they strike the ball with all their might, it usually ends up hooking or slicing. When they try to go easy, on the other hand, it just simply doesn’t go anywhere at all. So, how to overcome this? Practice with distance drills.
Simply go down to whatever driving range you prefer and approach the tee with a single goal in mind: hitting the ball as far as you can, each and every time. Generally speaking you’ll only have about two dozen drives during an average game of golf. That’s not a lot of practice. When you do drills like this, however, you can swing a hundred or more times in just a short amount of time. Consequently, you’ll find that your distance improves dramatically.
Hip Drills
If there’s one thing that sets amateurs apart from professionals in the world of golf, it’s hip turning. In many sports, and golf is no exception, the ability to flex and turn one’s hips gives one a range of motion much higher than those who lack said ability. For this reason, it’s vital to practice drills such as this one in order to keep your hips open and flexible.
Practice standing at the tee and keeping your body as square as possible. Now, take a swing with the driver, but only use one arm. As you do this, you should feel the proper degree of rotation in your hips, but chances are you’re somewhat tight and uncomfortable. Relax and repeat this drill until you feel fully stretched out.
Balance Drills
This particular drill is one that might make you feel a little bit silly at first, but it’s also certain to bring about vast improvements in your game. One problem that most golfers have is keeping their lead foot planted when they take their swings. Try placing a quarter on top of the shoe of your lead foot. When you take the swing, if the quarter falls off, you’re moving that foot too much. Once it remains on, then you’ve achieved a nice level swing with good balance.
Golf is a game like many others where the more you play, the better you’re going to get. Because you get immediate feedback on your performance in the form of a score, you can measure your progress on each and every hole. This kind of affirmation tends to keep people coming back again and again.
