The Proper Way To Grip Your Club
The game of golf is a very personal one and the player is responsible for many of the decisions concerning game play. One of these decisions happens to be one of the most important factors in playing golf. The way the player grips the golf club has a lot to do with the performance of the player’s swing and how well the ball is hit. There are three common ways to grip a club. Each of these methods contains their own benefits. Only the player can decide on which one is the best.
The Interlocking Grip is the most common out of the three and is particularly good for those with smaller hands. Take the club in the left hand and place the left thumb so that it’s parallel to the top of the golf club. Keep the left index finger extended outwards as the base of the right thumb is placed over the left thumb. Wrap the right fingers about the club until the right pinky finger interlocks with the left index finger. Adjust the grip, keeping those fingers interlocked, until it feels comfortable and natural.
For golfers that find their hands are not yet strong enough to achieve the needed swing and momentum, the Ten Finger or Baseball Golf Grip may be ideal. As the name suggests, the golf club is held much like a baseball bat. Slide the right hand next to the left hand with the pinky of the right hand touching the left index finger. With this grip some of the control over the club head may be lost, but if the player has yet to strengthen their hands the Baseball Golf Grip is a good one to start with until other grips can be adapted. This particular method is an old one and has fallen out of favor with many players.
The Overlap Golf Grip is very similar to the Interlock Golf Grip. Place the left fingers over the club and follow it with the right hand. Instead of interlocking the fingers of the left and right hand, they are simply placed on top of each other. Make sure to adjust for comfort.
It is important to find the grip that is most beneficial and is as comfortable as possible. It may be a good idea to try different styles of golf grips in order to find the one that will suit the player best.
