Is There A Difference Between Golf Balls
A golf ball by any other name…would it still get the distance and performance needed? What is the point of golf if there is no golf ball; not much of a point at all really. Many know that there is a difference in clubs but what about the golf balls that we so merciless knock around all afternoon?
The United State Golf Association has set forth a standard for golf balls, though for non professional play these standards can vary. The golf ball must weigh less than 1.62 ounces with a diameter of at least 1.69 inches and an initial velocity of 250 feet. These standards apply to any golf ball used in a USGA venue and create the appearance of a conforming construction, though that is not the case.
The difference of golf balls comes primarily from within, though the dimples on the surface can affect such elements as speed and lift since these dimples have a direct relation to aerodynamics. The dimples of the golf ball are only one difference, with the rest being interior.
There are three kinds of golf ball constructions. Each of these constructions relates to the game in some way and should be held in mind next time you play. Two piece balls are characterized by the large core and the cover. These balls are thought of as distance balls and are helpful if you find yourself not reaching the maximum range you are capable of. The multiple layer golf ball’s core is not one solid mass, but a layered core that is used as an all purpose ball. The last golf ball is the wound ball that is comprised of three pieces; the shell, core, and the rubber thread that is covering the core. The wound golf ball has a softer feel than its cousins.
Another difference in golf balls is how hard they feel. Generally, a harder ball travels further. Some golfers prefer softer feeling golf balls. The type of golf ball used is a matter or preference for the individual player and the conditions of the course.
Golf balls may appear similar when in fact each type of golf ball is vastly different from the last. Players need to consider many factors when choosing the right ball and should rarely make such a decision hastily. So next time you head to the course do not just grab any old pack of golf balls. Take time to notice the subtle differences and how those differences may affect your game.
